For smooth and hassle-free offline work environment, you need to have good synchronization between OST and Exchange server.

All versions of Outlook are affected by OST synchronization issues, including Outlook 2019, 2016, 2013, 2010, 2007, & 2003.

Common causes


  • Poor network connection
  • Hardware defects
  • Corrupt/ Damaged OST file

Once you start getting Synchronization issue, you will get the following error messages:

“Cannot start Microsoft Outlook.”

“Cannot open the Outlook window.”

“The set of folders cannot be opened”

“The file xxx.ost is not an Outlook data file (ost)”

Solution


Enable Automatic synchronization

  • Steps

> Tools > Options

>  Mail setup tab > send/receive tab > send/receive

(Click the check box for ‘send immediately when connected’)

Manual Synchronization

  • Steps

Right click on OST file > Properties > Clear offline items

Click OK

Click Send/ Receive tab > Update folder

If issue still persists, you will need to rebuild the OST file
